Traffic and travel arrangements for the Llŷn ac Eifionydd National Eisteddfod

With the National Eisteddfod of Wales taking place in Boduan near Pwllheli during the first week of August, Cyngor Gwynedd, Eisteddfod organisers and North Wales Police are reminding local people that the roads will be busy and that delays are likely in the area over the festival period.  

The Council, the Eisteddfod and the Police are calling on festival goers – whether they are local people or those travelling from other areas of Wales and beyond – to plan their travel arrangements in advance and to follow the road signs that will be in place.

Drivers are being reminded to take care if driving in the vicinity of the Maes and to be mindful that there may be pedestrians on the roads.  

To ensure traffic flow, and in the interests of the safety of all road users and local communities, temporary traffic arrangements and clear signage will be in place in the area. Some minor roads will also be closed. 

The public is kindly asked to respect the temporary arrangements for the short period that the festival will be held. These temporary arrangements will apply to all road users, not just people attending the Eisteddfod. 

 

Getting to the Eisteddfod  

Allow plenty of time to travel, especially if you need to arrive in time for a specific competition or event.  

• Public Transport – If you can, please use public transport as much as possible. This can help reduce the likelihood of congestion is better for the environment. Details of bus services – including the shuttle buses, late bus and taxi arrangements. Remember that bus and train services to other parts of the county and beyond are available from Pwllheli, connecting to the number 8 or 8E bus services to the Eisteddfod field.  

• Driving from the south (Porthmadog) - Traffic will be diverted onto the B4354 at the Afonwen roundabout, through Chwilog and on to Y Ffôr. At the crossroads in the centre of Y Ffôr there will be temporary lights, continue straight ahead over the crossroads. Continue along the B4354 to the junction with the A497. Turn left onto the A497 and follow the road until you reach the car park.   

• Driving from the east (Caernarfon): Follow the A499 to Y Ffôr and turn right at the temporary lights in the centre of the village. Continue along the B4354 to the junction with the A497. Turn left onto the A497 and follow the road until you reach the car park. 

• Parking – Parking is free at the Eisteddfod.   

• Drivers with a blue badge – Disabled visitors with a blue badge should follow the signs to the disabled car park. 

 

Road closures  

The following roads will be closed from Friday, 4 August until the end of the Eisteddfod:  

• Penlôn Llŷn, Pwllheli – The road will be closed between the junction with the Efailnewydd road (A497) to the junction with Stryd Moch (Gaol Street), Pwllheli.  

• Three lanes in the Boduan area: 
  • The unclassified road between St Beuno's Church past Bryn Eglwys to the Llannor path (No. 33) will be closed from the junction opposite Cae Llan to Penlôn Caernarfon (A499).  
  • The unclassified road near Plas Boduan will be closed from its junction with the B4354 to the junction opposite Refail, Boduan.  
  • The class III road at Boduan will be closed from the junction opposite Refail, Boduan to the junction with the road from the former surgery north of the B4354, Nefyn.  

There will be full access for residents to come and go to their properties as usual throughout the time the roads are closed.  

There is the possibility of additional road closures at short notice during Eisteddfod week, for the safety of local residents and all road users.  

 

Footpath closed  

The public footpath at Cwnhinger, Llannor will be closed (Path No. 11.) 

 

Councillor Berwyn Parry Jones, Cyngor Gwynedd's Cabinet Member for Highways Services, said:  

"The excitement for the Eisteddfod is gaining momentum and it's great to see our communities getting ready to welcome Wales and the world to Llŷn ac Eifionydd. As a Council, we have been working with the Eisteddfod organisers, North Wales Police and our other partners on specific road arrangements that will help ensure that the traffic continues to flow as freely as possible and to keep everyone safe.   

"If you need to travel within the Eisteddfod area to go to work, to appointments, to run errands and so on, don’t forget that the roads are likely to be busy so make sure you leave plenty of time for all journeys. All the better of course if you can make alternative arrangements in advance."

Chief Superintendent Neil Thomas from North Wales Police added: "We are calling on everyone who will be in the area during the first week of August – if they are going to the Eisteddfod or not – to take extra care on the roads and follow the directions given. There will be prominent yellow signs showing the way to the Eisteddfod, and if everyone follows them we will be able to manage the traffic flow more effectively for the benefit of all."   

Betsan Moses, Chief Executive of the National Eisteddfod of Wales said: "We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the  Llŷn ac Eifionydd Eisteddfod 2023 and have worked on detailed arrangements to ensure everyone can get to the Maes as safely and as possible and without bother. Once you arrive at the festival site, please follow the stewards' instructions, they are there to help you arrive and leave the car park safely and conveniently.
