Improving Routes for Walking, Wheeling, and Cycling
This project is a collaboration between Transport for Wales and Cyngor Gwynedd to look at making it easier, safer, and more convenient for people to walk, wheel and cycle on routes into Bangor and onwards to the railway station. Over the coming years, it is likely that various routes will be reviewed; however, for the time being, the focus of study will be on the A487, Penrhos Road, and Penchwintan Road, between the Faenol Roundabout and Bangor Railway Station.
On this webpage, you can find emerging ideas for the types of improvements that could be made along the corridor, these include, but are not limited to:
-
New cycle lanes
-
New shared use paths for pedestrians, wheelers and, cyclists to use
-
Improved footways for pedestrians
-
Improved crossings for pedestrians, wheelers, and cyclists
-
Features to help slow traffic speeds and create a safer route for all.
The work completed to date is in the early stages, with opportunity to change the proposals following consideration of comments received as part of this engagement. Feedback received will be used to further develop the designs therefore both positive (aspects of the scheme you like) and constructive (any elements that you may have concerns about) feedback would be appreciated.
All improvements would be subject to further design and consultation after finalising the design plans. Funding and relevant permissions will need to be obtained before any changes to the roads or footpaths can be implemented. However, subject to community feedback, it is the aspiration of Cyngor Gwynedd to have the first set of improvements built and ready to use this year.
Wider Context
This project is part of wider work Cyngor Gwynedd are doing for walking, wheeling, and cycling. This work reflects the Welsh Government’s overall commitment to encourage, support, and promote active travel for local trips. It also links to wider plans to improve Bangor Railway Station and aims to help encourage people to access the rail station by active modes.
By providing better active travel provisions, and developing a network of routes across Bangor, Cyngor Gwynedd aim to make it easier, and safer for people who already walk, wheel, and cycle and, importantly, encourage more people to leave the car at home for short local journeys. In the context of climate change and ecological emergency, this is now more important than ever.
